Dynamics of the Russian car market in the first half of 2018

Association of European Business decreases forecasts of car sales in Russia for 2008

Martin Jahn, the vice-president of auto manufacturer committee of AEB and general director of Volkswagen Group Rus said that new car sales in 2008 will grow only 18 percent to 2.75 million units. Foreign car sales will increase only 28 percent but in 2007 increase of 70 percent was fixed. According to Jahn before the crisis the committee expected that this year 3 million of new cars would be sold.
Experts, polled by RBK daily, say that sales slowdown and scarcity of funds of dealers to buy-out cars will influence the fall of sales volume. According to them several following months will be the most difficult for domestic auto market. Freezing or reduction of plans by automobile companies testifies to this fact. At the beginning of next year the consolidation of auto market will begin and auto component manufacturers will postpone entering the Russian market. In its turn it may influence the carrying-out of localization requirements of auto manufacturers.
But most of all manufacturers are afraid of price wars. Discounts will not be able to boost the market but decrease the profitability dramatically and it will be difficult to return to the former price level, says Martin Jahn. In his opinion the Russian market is very competitive and because of that prices grow only 2 percent per year that dose not compensate either inflation in the amount of 14 percent or cost increase about 30 percent. If the money assigned by the government to banks does not reach the auto market the collapse will happen, says Martin Jahn.
