Chinese brands lose their share on the Russian market

Experts of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" according to the results of the conducted research say that in 2008 the sales growth rate of Chinese vehicles is declining.
In the marketing report "Auto industry in China and its expansion to the Russian market" analysts give the sales dynamics of Chinese vehicles. The first vehicles of Chinese production were officially sold in Russia in 2004. They were Tianye Admiral pickups and only 260 units were sold. In the following years the number of Chinese brands and their sales volumes in our country were constantly growing. Thus 6 733 Chinese vehicles were sold in 2005 and their market share in Russia exceeded 1 percent. In 2006 these sales increased more than thrice, almost to 23 000 units and it allowed them to cover 2.3 percent of the foreign market. Last year Chinese expansion to Russian auto market acquired new market sizes. The number of brands from China reached 14 and for 12 months about 57 000 Chinese vehicles were sold which covered 3.5 percent from total sales volume of foreign vehicles. For the first half of 2008 about 25 000 vehicles of Chinese brands were sold in Russia. So their share on foreign car market declined as it was in 2006 and turned out to be 2.4 percent.
Experts consider that it is connected with a range of measures which Russian government takes to support national auto industry. Thus the implementation of more rigid certification rules became the serious obstacle for Chinese vehicles. These rules not only increase certification expenses in three-four times to $150 000 but also kill any chance for the most manufacturers from China to get in general. The recent government regulation to increase the quote of entrance duty for finished bodies in the amount of 15 percent of customs value but not less than 5 000 Euro per one unit makes Chinese vehicle assembly in Russia absolutely unprofitable. It is known that the plant in Taganrog use CKD production which launches vehicles Chery and sells them under its own brand Vortex Estina. It worthwhile to say that none of Chinese companies could get customs privileges in due time within the framework of industrial assembly.
