Used car market grew by 8% in 2021

Last year, Russians bought 5.95 million used cars, which is 8% higher than in 2020 (5.5 million units). This was established by the experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" in the course of processing the relevant data of JSC "Electronic Passport". Thus, the secondary market in Russia is growing for the second year in a row.

The most popular among the inhabitants of our country are still used LADA cars, which accounted for about a quarter (24%) of the secondary market in 2021. This amounts to 1.41 million purchased used cars of the Russian brand, which is 10% higher than in 2020. Second place in the brand rating is kept by Toyota, the share of which is 11%. Thus, for the whole previous year, Russians became owners of 652,000 such used cars (+5%). Meanwhile, the Korean brand Hyundai (330,000 units; +8%) moved up to rank three, by displacing Japanese Nissan (321,000 units; +2%) to rank four. The Korean Kia (321,000 units; +7%) finishes the top five in the secondary market among brands. The volumes of purchased cars with mileage of other brands are below 300 thousand units, and each of them accounts for less than 5%.

As for the model preferences of Russians in the secondary market, for the second year in a row Ford Focus is the leader there. At the end of 2021, 139 thousand "tricks" were purchased in the Russian Federation, which is 6% higher than the result of a year ago. LADA 2114 hatchback is the second one (133,000 units; +7%). This is followed by the Korean bestsellers Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio, each of which was purchased in the amount of 128 thousand and 127 thousand used units, respectively, by showing an increase of 8%. Last year, LADA 2107 sedan finished the TOP-5 of the secondary market among models (115 thousand units; + 10%).
