The Russian car market grew by 4% in 2021


Sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in December fell by 19.9% to 133,470 vehicles. According to the results of 2021, the Russian car market was 1 million 666 thousand 780 vehicles (+4.3%), according to the data of the Association of European Businesses. As noted in the AEB, the overall positive result is due to a low base in the months of the 2020 lockdown. And the most part of last year, the market showed the negative dynamics due to the negative impact of global factors, such as the shortage of electronic components, problems with logistics, disruption of supply chains, rising cost of materials, etc.

Based on the fact that all negative factors will not be eliminated during the main part of 2022, AEB predicts the growth of the Russian car market in the coming year by 3.3% to 1 million 722 thousand cars and light commercial vehicles. Leadership in the Russian car market is held by the LADA brand, the sales of which grew by 2 % the previous year and reached 350,714 cars. The second place in terms of sales is retained by Kia – sales of 205,801 cars (+2%) ensured the leadership of the Korean brand in the market of foreign cars. The third place is occupied by Hyundai with 167,331 sold cars, which is 3% higher than a year ago.

This is followed by Renault – cars of this brand were chosen by 131,552 buyers (+2%). Toyota finishes the top-five, the sales of which grew by 7% and reached 97,941 cars. The TOP-10 of best-selling brands in 2021 also included Skoda (90,443 units, -4%), Volkswagen (86,108 units, -14%), GAZ (56,468 units, +10%), Nissan (51,338 units, -9%) and BMW (46,802 units, +10%).
