Hyundai localizes assembly of Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Palisade and Kia Sportage in St. Petersburg

Within the framework of a special investment contract, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus will localize the production of Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Palisade and Kia Sportage crossovers at the facilities of the former General Motors plant in St. Petersburg. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation informed TASS agency about this, by adding that the conclusion of the additional agreement was approved at the meeting of the interdepartmental commission on the SPIC on December 17th.

The volume of the manufacturer's investments will be increased from 16 billion rubles to 52.8 billion rubles. In November 2021, it was reported that the company plans to release new car models at the former General Motors plant in St. Petersburg by 2023. The project will create about 1,000 jobs. As a reminder, in November 2020, Hyundai closed the deal to acquire the General Motors plant in St. Petersburg. At the same time, the financial details of the transaction and the company's plans for a new site in Russia were not disclosed.

The production capacity of the plant in Shushary is 60 thousand vehicles per year, and GM's investments in its construction were $ 300 million. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus is currently using its new site in Shushary to prepare components for shipment to Kazakhstan. So, in May 2021, the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant and Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan LLP reached an agreement on the supply of auto components for the small-unit assembly of Hyundai Accent cars to the plant in Kazakhstan (in Russia, the model is called Solaris).

The contract affects the supply of components manufactured directly at the Hyundai Motor plant in St. Petersburg (large body panels, welded body parts), as well as Russian and imported components (from Europe, Korea, China and India) of the car plant's suppliers.
