Foreign car sales in Russia are decreasing

September turned out to be the most unsuccessful month for Russian sellers of foreign cars. 15 out of 50 brands demonstrated decline of sales.
According to the data of Association of European Business 179 432 foreign brand vehicles were sold on the Russian market in September, up 22 percent over 2007. Though from the beginning of the year monthly growth always exceeded 40 percent. The September figure of sales volume is only 2 percent more than it was in August. Season sales surge was interrupted by the financial crisis which corrected balance on the foreign car market.
At once 15 automobile brands showed sales decline in September. Even ten top manufacturer leaders were among them such as present market leader Chevrolet (2% decline), Ford (13% decline), Mitsubishi (25% decline), Renault (4% decline) and Kia (11% decline). According to the newspaper "Kommersant" earlier only market outsiders demonstrated negative dynamics as usual. For example, Chinese and Iranian manufacturers. But sales of Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, Renault and Kia began to decrease already in August. At that time analysts did not hurry to estimate the situation negatively and advised to wait till September. Now it is clear that global financial crisis had a strong impact on the Russian automobile market.

Sales of the most popular vehicles in Russia Ford Focus fell 22 percent in September, sale of the budget" Renault Logan declined 15 percent, sales of Hyundai Accent reduced 28 percent, Daewoo Matiz" sales decreased 11percent and Chevrolet Lanos" sales fell 35percent. And Toyota turned out to be the sales volume leader in September. However, sales in the premium car segment are also declining. Volvo"s sales reduced 35 percent, sales of Porsche fell 13 percent, Cadillac"s sales decreased 7 percent and Hummer declined 26 percent. Dealers consider that financial crisis will have an impact on the Russian automobile market for a year and a half. But the manufacturers do not announce their intentions to change production and sales plans in Russia.
For nine months foreign car sales in Russia increased 40 percent to 1.61 million units. Chevrolet (175 800 units, up 34%) and Hyundai (159 400 units, up 67%) became the best sellers. Toyota occupied the third place with 145 400 units, up 32%, displacing Ford with 141 400 units, up 17%.
