The outgoing year in the car market was marked by a total deficit. Experts interviewed by the AUTOSTAT agency told what other factors determined the state of the Russian auto retail in 2021. According to Aleksey Starikov, Deputy General Director for Sales of New Cars at AVILON AG, throughout 2021, sales in the Russian car market depended on the availability of cars. From January to December, dealers received varying volumes of supply, but this was not enough to meet the already high customer demand.

“During the pandemic, a high deferred demand has formed in the automotive market. First of all, it is associated with a shortage of new cars, a difficult economic situation in the country, aggravated by sanctions and the instability of the ruble, which led to a decrease in the standard of living. And against the background of the constant rise in the cost of cars, customers began to postpone the purchase until better times. This is especially evident among consumers of cars in the budget segment - their audience reacts most sharply to economic changes. A significant part of the deferred demand has already been realized at the moment. But in any case, there are still customers who postpone their purchase for an indefinite period because of the increase in car prices,” said Yulia Ovchinnikova, Development Director of KLYUCHAVTO Group.

According to Andrey Terlyukevich, General Director of the AvtoSpecCentre Group of Companies, due to the increase in prices, the automakers expect to compensate for the costs of downtime, as well as from the narrowing of the range of new cars. This is the most noticeable in the premium segment - prices for some models grew up to 20%, for example, popular models Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Cadillac added 18% in average. Customers are still interested in the most popular and demanded models,” summarizes Aleksey Shibakov, the head of new car sales at Avtomir Group.
