Financial crisis approached Russian automobile industry

Global financial crisis approached Russian automobile industry as Russian manufacturers began to reduce production plans of 2008.
According to the newspaper "Vedomosti" yesterday GAZ Group ceased the production of "Gazel" from the 6th to the 10th of October. Helen Matveeva, the representative of GAZ Group, said that the plant began flexible planning of production volumes according to the demand in conditions of liquidity crisis. It is necessary in order to reduce company"s debts under floating assets. In October it is planed to reduce the production volume 13 percent down to 2 000 units. The company hopes that because of crisis the demand will turn to low-priced vehicles which it produces and so the company will be able to overtake sales volume.
Then "KAMAZ" announced about reduction plans of production which using all its capacities sold 52 648 trucks last year. Yesterday Vladimir Samoylov, the representative of the company, said that the plant is working according to the anti-crisis program which means a four-day workweek instead of a six-day one. He did not exclude that costs minimization will demand staff reduction up to 10 percent. The source, close to "KAMAZ" management, says about 20 percent reduction of production program for 2008. First of all it is connected with decline in demand for cranes and dumpers from builders.
Experts say that primarily financial crisis reflected on commercial vehicles as most of them are sold through credit and leasing programs but banks do not have money. However AVTOVAZ also does not work regularly. One of its suppliers told that last week the conveyer was stopped twice because of ill-timed component supply. Moreover the Togliatti automobile giant has problems with sale. One of AVTOVAZ" managers told "Vedomosti" that there are 96 000 cars at the warehouses and in dealer centers. Usually there are 60-70 cars. But AVTOVAZ is not going to reduce the production plan for 2008 which is 974 000 cars. Experts think that the plant may even have benefit from the crisis as customers, whom banks will not give credit for a foreign car, will buy "Lada".
Analysts forecast that this year AVTOVAZ" sales proceeds will be 187 545 billion rubles as in 2007. But KAMAZ" sales proceeds will reduce 15-20 percent down to 95 billion rubles instead of planned 128 billion. If GAZ Group reduces the production further its sales proceeds will decrease 10-15 percent.
The production reduction against the financial crisis is the global tendency in automobile industry. Opel, BMW, Skoda, General Motors and Daimler consequently announced about production decrease this week.
