GAZ Group may launch the mass production of a gas piston engine running on hydrogen fuel in 2.5 years. This was announced by Konstantin Rouhani, General Director of Power Units of GAZ Group, by adding that tests of hydrogen engines is planned to be completed in 1.5 years. According to him, the design of a hydrogen engine will be close to that of a gas piston engine. “We believe that at the moment, if we come to a strategy of using a gas piston engine running on hydrogen, we can get a vehicle 30-40% more expensive than the current ones. The engine will be less demanding on the purity of hydrogen fuel,” he said.

At the same time, electric buses that already exist are 2.5 times more expensive than diesel ones. According to Mr. Rouhani, a hydrogen bus powered by a gas piston engine is much cheaper than an electric bus powered by fuel cells. Gas piston engine technology solves the task of reducing carbon emissions, but at the same time synergy with the design and production of CNG engines, gearboxes and other component industries existing in Russia remains. Recall that in September at the Comtarns 2021 exhibition, the company presented two models of city water buses, which are based on an electric bus and are equipped with hydrogen fuel cells.
