Automobile companies decrease sales forecasts in Russia for 2009

Russians will purchase less cars than they might do because of the financial crisis. The newspaper Vedomosti polled management of the leading world companies and Russian dealers and found out that automobile companies decrease sales forecasts in Russia for 2009.
Thierry Dombreval, Toyota Europe vice-president, said that the company decreased growth forecast of the Russian market in 2009 from 15 to 5 percent. John Fleming, president & CEO, Ford of Europe also forecasts the stagnation of automobile sales in Russia next year. He pointed that from the beginning of the year market growth dropped from 25 to 5 percent. Jean-Michel Jalinier, the director of Renault office in Russia, also acknowledges the slowdown growth of Russian market. But according to his words the company has decided to wait three-four weeks more to understand the market tendency. Nissan as well does not hurry to revise the forecast which is 15 percent.
The management of GM is more optimistic. Russian economy is based on energy sources and we do not see any factors why it should stop growing. We see that the market growth slowed 5-10 percent in August but in the first half of the year it increased 30 percent, said Carl-Peter Foster, GM Europe president. In 2009 Russia may turn to be the largest market for GM in Europe.
However Russian dealers of foreign cars say that the production and supply of vehicles in Russia are according to the plans approved at the end of 2007. But in September the purchasing activity turned out to be less because of the crisis. That is the reason why there are so many cars in dealers and importers warehouses. Experts forecast the further sales decrease which is directly connected with tighter credit policy of Russian banks.
