In Belarus it is banned to sell new cars to Russians

Car dealers in Belarus talked about the ban on sales of new cars to customers from Russia. Russian buyers have switched to this market, in an attempt to save money on the purchase of new cars and not to pay extra for expensive imposed options. In turn, the Russian Association of Auto Dealers (ROAD) assured that they do not have information about the agreement between Russian and Belarusian dealers on the introduction of a ban on the sale of cars to Russians.

“We consider such an agreement to be impossible in a competitive market,” the ROAD said. Meanwhile, the car market in Belarus strongly depends on the Russian car market in terms of deliveries of new cars, both through official and unofficial distribution channels, experts of AUTOSTAT agency noted. So, after the crisis of 2010, when car sales in the country fell to 12.9 thousand units, the Belarusian car market in the period from 2013 to 2017 managed to recover to the level of 25-30 thousand units. Improved economic conditions, coupled with a sharp decline in the gray market, have resulted in the official registration of almost all new vehicles.

As a result, sales of new cars updated records every year, by reaching 65.1 thousand units in 2019. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Belarusian car market significantly decreased (53.5 thousand units, -17.8%), and in 2021 the negative dynamics continued. For eight months of this year, sales were 30 thousand cars, which is 16.1% lower than in the same period of 2020.
