Hyundai will start the production of new models at former GM plant in 2023

In October, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus decided to begin the reconstruction of the former General Motors plant in St. Petersburg in order to start the production of new models by 2023. This was announced by Viktor Vasiliev, Director for External Relations of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus, by adding that it will be a wide range of cars. The project will create about 1,000 jobs, writes the Finmarket agency.

As a reminder, in November 2020, Hyundai finished a deal to acquire the General Motors plant in St. Petersburg. At the same time, the financial details of the transaction and the company's plans for a new site in Russia were not disclosed. The production capacity of the plant in Shushary is 60 thousand vehicles per a year, and GM's investments in its construction were $ 300 million. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus is currently using its new site in Shushary to prepare components for shipment to Kazakhstan. So, in May 2021, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant and Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan LLP reached an agreement on the supply of auto components for the small-unit assembly of Hyundai Accent cars to the plant in Kazakhstan (in Russia, the model is called Solaris).

The contract concerns the supply of components manufactured directly at the Hyundai Motor plant in St. Petersburg (large body panels, welded body parts), as well as Russian and imported components (from Europe, Korea, China and India) from the car plant's suppliers. We also add that Hyundai currently produces its bestsellers Creta and Solaris at its own plant in St. Petersburg, while the rest of Hyundai models are produced by contract assembly at the Avtotor Kaliningrad enterprise.
