Electric vehicle sales in Russia set a new record

According to the results of ten months of 2021, 845 electric vehicles were sold in Russia, which is 2.2 times higher than the indicator for the whole previous year, according to the Association of European Businesses.

According to the chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, Dr. Thomas Stärzel, the positive dynamics of sales of electric vehicles contributes to the development of charging infrastructure and enables distributors to bring to the Russian market not only a larger number of cars, but also more affordable models. Of course, the growing segment of electric vehicles may be eventually occupied by locally made models. This positive development could be seriously undermined by the refusal to extend the zero import duty rate on electric vehicles in the coming years, which will lead to an increase in the price of electric vehicles, a decrease in consumer demand and subsequent stagnation in sales dynamics.

“In addition, some manufacturers may postpone the introduction of their electric vehicles to the Russian market amid higher costs for lower-than-expected sales of electric vehicles. Therefore, our Committee is convinced that the extension of the zero rate of import customs duty on electric vehicles is beneficial both to all market participants and to the state,” said Thomas Stärzel. It is worth noting that sales of "green" cars in our country began to grow rapidly since mid-2020.

In the segment of new electric vehicles, this is partly due to the emergence of bright new products such as Audi e-tron and Porcshe Taycan. However, the main impetus for the development of the market for both new and used electric vehicles was given by the abolition of customs duties when importing them into the territory of the EAEU, which includes Russia. Recall that earlier the rate on the import of electric cars for legal entities was 15%, and individuals paid a duty of 48-54% of the customs value, which was actually a barrier for the purchase of electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the duty-free regime expires at the end of 2021.
