For 7 years, the number of models in the Russian car market has decreased by a third

From 2014 to 2021, the total number of models of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles officially sold in Russia decreased by 32%, experts of the analytical agency AUTOSTAT noted. If 7 years ago, in 2014, the number of models of passenger cars and LCVs offered by distributors was 442, then in 2021 it dropped to 299, having dropped below 300 for the first time. Thus, for the previous 7 years, the Russian car market has lost 143 models.

According to the agency's experts, this process affected all brands, as in the face of a significant drop in car sales (since 2014 - over 30%), manufacturers were forced to reduce their lines, relying on more "popular" models. Thus, in percentage terms, American brands suffered the most (-65%). This year they are represented by 14 models, and 7 years ago there were 40 of them. The number of models from Japanese manufacturers (by 43%, or 41 units), among which there are now 54, has significantly decreased.

More than others, in absolute terms, cars of European brands have left our market (-61 units). This year they are represented by 144 models - 30% lower than in 2014. As for other brands, they "lost" less. For example, the number of models of Russian brands during the period under review decreased from 26 to 16, Korean - from 33 to 31, Chinese - from 43 to 40.
