Why are electric cars cheaper in provinces than cars with internal combustion engines?

On October 20th, within the framework of the Autostat AnalyticBreak online conference, the project manager of Drom.ru Anton Serkov spoke about the peculiarities of electric vehicle sales from the point of view of the classification. According to Drom.ru, the average price of a passenger car with an internal combustion engine is 632,000 rubles today, an electric car - 1,415,000 rubles, a hybrid - 1,902,000 rubles.

At the same time, in most regions, Russians will spend less money on purchase of an electric car than on a car with a classic internal combustion engine, and in Moscow and St. Petersburg - the opposite. This picture is formed due to the fact that in the capital cities the bulk of electric vehicles are expensive models from the premium segment, the cost of which starts from 6-7 million rubles.

In the regions, we are talking about mass models like Nissan Leaf, the price of which is quite comparable to the price of a car with an internal combustion engine. Anton Serkov also cited survey data showing that today a third (34%) of car owners are not even considering the purchase of electric car in the next couple of years. More than a quarter (28%) of respondents are not satisfied with the high price and small selection of models, and other 23% fear that there will be nowhere to charge such a car due to the lack of a sufficient number of charging stations.

As a result, today the electric car is most often the second car in the family, designed exclusively for trips within the city. In order for it to take the "first place", both technological improvements (an increase in battery capacity) and a qualitative development of infrastructure (a multiple increase in the number of charging stations) are necessary.
