The Ministry of Industry and Trade will tighten the methodology for assessing the localization of cars in Russia

In Russia, control over the localization of cars will significantly increase; the Ministry of Industry and Trade is preparing an appropriate assessment methodology. Now the ministry intends to determine independently which products are classified as "cars made in Russia", and not be content with the localization data provided by the manufacturers themselves.

The new principle provides for the disassembly of cars for parts and on-site inspections of factories up to the analysis of the Russian origin of paints and varnishes. As previously reported, the Ministry of Industry and Trade wants to abandon the multiplying factor that allowed old and cheap models - for example, UAZ “Bukhanka” - to compete on equal terms with new ones when calculating the level of localization and deliveries under government orders. We are talking about cars that do not provide sophisticated electronics, driver assistance systems, etc.

In theory, cheap modifications of Russian cars, such as LADA Granta, may also be under threat - it will be unprofitable to produce them without multimedia and other electronics, although consumers are ready to buy them so. According to Rosstat, for 8 months of 2021, 916 thousand passenger cars rolled off Russian conveyors, which is 29.8% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
