BMW will expand the car production at Avtotor

BMW Company has decided on a model of production developing in Russia: it intends to deepen production processes in partnership with Avtotor, a Kaliningrad company. This was announced by the head of the BMW Group in Russia, Stefan Teuchert, noting that in the issue of building its own plant in our country, the concern did not manage to come to an optimal solution on the SPIC in negotiations with the Russian government.

Meanwhile, Avtotor has a special investment contract signed with the state in 2018. Until July 2021, BMW cars were produced at this enterprise under soft transitional conditions, involving the receipt of industrial subsidies from residents of the special economic zone (SEZ) of the Kaliningrad region. At the same time, the assembly actually remained "screwdriver", without welding and painting, but now the grace period has ended. At the beginning of this year, BMW was even forced to reduce the number of models assembled at Avtotor, replacing them in the Russian market with those imported from abroad. This became an additional factor for the rise in prices for cars, as well as the very end of the preferential assembly regime within the SEZ.

Thus, only large crossovers BMW X5, X6 and X7 remained on the Avtotor conveyor. All other models were completely transferred to imports - these are the 5th and 7th series sedans, as well as the X1, X3 and X4 crossovers. But it is precisely the favorable prices for locally assembled cars and their availability in dealerships that have allowed BMW to keep the leadership in terms of sales in the Russian premium segment for the last two years. Localized cars had almost a half of BMW brand sales in our country.
