Hyundai may localize the production of 2-liter engine in Russia

In 2022, Korean carmaker Hyundai plans to localize the production of a 2-liter engine at the Hyundai Via plant under construction in Sestroretsk near St. Petersburg. It is intended for a number of Hyundai-Kia models assembled at the Kaliningrad Avtotor.

The intentions of Hyundai and Kia to localize the production of engines were known from their special investment contracts (SPIC), but they only named the dates for the launch of the Hyundai Via plant and the start of assembly of the 1.6 liter engine - October 2021. Investments in the construction of the enterprise will be about 13.1 billion rubles. At the first stage of operation, Hyundai Via Rus plant plans to produce 240 thousand engines per a year, in the future, the plant's capacity may increase to 330 thousand engines per a year.

Thanks to the opening of a new plant, the company will be able to increase the level of localization and move to the installation of Russian-made engines already at the end of 2021. At the moment, cars manufactured by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus are equipped with engines from Hyundai WIA supplied by import. According to industry sources, Hyundai Via plans to start the production of NU 2.0 engines in the summer of 2022.

According to experts, this raises the issue of transferring the assembly of some models from the Kaliningrad Avtotor to the former GM site in Shushary (St. Petersburg), which Hyundai bought in 2020.
