Three brands accumulate more than 50% of the diesel car market in Russia


According to the results of the first half of 2021, almost 65 thousand new passenger cars equipped with a diesel engine were sold in Russia. This is 34.5% higher than in January-June 2020. Such data are provided by experts of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT", based on the data of the AEB.

They also noted that the share of diesel vehicles on the market decreased slightly: from 8.1% (in the 1st half of 2020) to 8% (in the 1st half of 2021). At the same time, the most popular brand of cars with such an engine among Russians remains German BMW, which accounts for more than a quarter of the market in this segment. So, in January-June, diesel models of the Bavarian brand were sold in amount of 16.3 thousand units - almost 30% higher than in 2020. The second place in this rating is taken by another manufacturer from Germany - Mercedes-Benz (10.2 thousand units; + 82%). Its share in this market is about 16%.

According to the results of the half-year, Korean Hyundai (6,200 units; + 110%) took the third place, by occupying about 10% of the market. In total, these three brands occupied 50.5% of the total new diesel car market in Russia. Toyota (6.1 thousand units; -5%) and Renault (about 6.1 thousand units; + 141%) also entered the TOP-5 at the end of the half-year - according to the volumes, they have a chance to push Hyundai in this ranking. Moreover, Toyota was already one of the top-3 of leaders at the end of 2020.
