It appears that only 3 vehicles had the title of the most popular SUV model in Russia over the past 15 years. This was discovered by the experts of AUTOSTAT agency, who studied the statistics of the new passenger car market for 2007 - 2021. It is well known that the Hyundai Creta has been the most popular crossover in the country for the last 5 years.
Having won this title for the first time in 2017, this model remains an absolute leader in the SUV segment. Even now, in the first half of the year, it is far ahead of its competitors, which, most likely, will enable the Creta to take the first place in 2021. Before the Korean model entered the market (in 2016), the Renault Duster was the bestselling SUV - the French crossover held the title of the leader from 2013 to 2016, i.e. for 4 years in a row. It also achieved this the next year after entering the market (in 2012). And before that, in 2007 - 2012, the Chevrolet Niva SUV was the most popular SUV in the Russian market.
According to AUTOSTAT agency, if in 2007 its share in the segment was 12%, for the next 5 years it was in the range of 7 - 9%. We should also mention that during the leadership period, this indicator ranged from 8% to 9%for the Renault Duster and from 9% to 10% for the Hyundai Creta.
