Volkswagen localizes the production of turbo engines in Russia

On June 4th, Volkswagen Group Rus signed a memorandum of intent with the government of the Kaluga region on the production of the 1.4 TSI engine at its plant in Kaluga from 2024. After the launch of the project, the maximum capacity of the enterprise will increase from the current 150 thousand engines to 240 thousand units per year. Investments in increasing and adapting of the plant's capacity for the production of a new engine will be 6 billion rubles, the press service of the automaker reports.

New 1.4 TSI engine with 150 hp will be produced at the company's plant together with the currently produced 1.6 MPI engine. Engines produced in Kaluga are installed in the most popular models of Russian production: Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Rapid, Skoda Octavia, as well as the new Volkswagen Taos, which was launched in May 2021. Recall that Volkswagen Group Rus Company launched the production of engines at its own plant in Kaluga in September of 2015.

The enterprise with an area of 32 thousand square meters is located in the Grabtsevo industrial park in Kaluga, in the immediate vicinity of the Volkswagen automobile plant. Volkswagen has invested about 250 million Euros in the construction of a motor plant with a production capacity of 150 thousand engines per a year.

As previously reported by AUTOSTAT, in July of 2019, Volkswagen Group Rus signed a special investment contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, within the framework of which it plans to implement a project to deepen the localization of locally produced car models.
