The Russian car market more than doubled in May

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in May grew 2.3 times to 151,964 vehicles. According to the results of five months of 2021, Russian car market was 663,612 vehicles (+ 38.7%), according to the data of the Association of European Businesses.

As noted in the AEB, in May, the growth of new car sales, as expected, was at a very high level, taking into account the lockdown introduced in 2020 in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation will remain the same in June, but after July it will be possible to talk about more realistic indicators on YOY basis.

In summer months there will be implications of supply cuts amid a worldwide shortage of electronic components. Therefore, AEB expects a decrease in sales of most manufacturers in comparison with the current high consumer demand. With government support from consumers and manufacturers, it can be expected a positive end of the year. According to the current AEB forecast, by the end of 2021, 1 million 632 thousand passenger cars and light commercial vehicles will be sold in Russia, which means a 2.1% market growth in compare with the previous year.

Leadership in the Russian car market is held by LADA brand, the sales of which grew 2.5 times in May and reached 38,284 vehicles. The second place in terms of sales volume is kept by KIA - the sale of 18,818 cars (2.4 times growth) provided the Korean brand with the leadership in the foreign car market. The third place is occupied by Hyundai with 16,261 sold cars, which is 2.5 times higher than a year ago.

This is followed by Renault - cars of this brand were chosen by 12,482 buyers (an increase of 2.2 times). Skoda still finishes the top five with sales of 9,561 cars (3.3 times growth). The TOP-10 of best-selling brands in May also included Volkswagen (9,155 units, an increase of 2.5 times), Toyota (7349 units, + 64%), GAZ (4,381 units, + 61%), Nissan (3827 units, + 73%) and Haval (3167 units, an increase of 4.2 times).
