Experts informed how the shortage of microchips affected the Russian car market

Many global automakers are forced to suspend or reduce car production due to the global shortage of microchips, which are widely used in the systems of modern cars. Experts interviewed by the AUTOSTAT agency told how much this problem affected the Russian car market, and when the situation with a shortage of microchips for the car industry can normalize.

According to the head of the Sigma Service sales department, Georgy Konovalov, at present many automakers cannot supply the volume that they should supply according to the sales plans. This applies to cars of the VAG group, Korean production and many other brands. There is a shortage of cars today in all segment: if there are no chips, then there are none in the mass and premium segments. If today the delivery time for cars is about 4-5 months, in the future it may increase to 7-8 months. In turn, Vladimir Miroshnikov, Development Director of ROLF, notes that the shortage of commercial vehicles is still observed in many brands, and in some of them the situation with the availability of cars is even worse than it was in winter.

The situation with imported models is generally worse than with localized ones. Meanwhile, the scarcity of microchips is far from the only problem in the global automotive industry. So, already now dealers have begun to face a shortage of spare parts. So far, the problems relate to individual positions for body parts, but it is possible that soon the deficit will cover more massive positions. “There is indeed a shortage of electronics on the market, which has led to the fact that expensive vehicle configurations have limited availability. This is due to the lack of semiconductors, air suspensions, microchips.

Now automakers are bringing to the market what they can produce, which is simpler standardized trims. It is better to produce something for which there are components than nothing at all. The electronics deficit will remain until the autumn, when this problem will most likely be resolved,” comments Andrey Olkhovsky, General Director of AVTODOM JSC.
