FinAuto-2021: how does the car loan market feel in Russia?

The executive director of the agency “AUTOSTAT”, Sergey Udalov, and the deputy director for marketing of the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI), Vladimir Shikin, told about the current state of the car loan market at the automotive business forum “FinAuto-2021. Financial Instruments of the Market”. Despite the pandemic, the share of new passenger cars purchased on credit is growing.

So, from 2018 to 2020, it grew from 39% to 44%. And in the 1st quarter of 2021, its value has already reached 44.7%. At the same time, in January - March 2021, the market of new passenger cars, according to the AEB, fell by 2.5%, and the market of used cars, according to the AUTOSTAT agency, grew by 3.3%. Sergey Udalov told about it. Loan applications are increasing every year, said Vladimir Shikin. In 2020, motorists submitted up to 600 thousand applications per a month. At the same time, the level of approval showed a "curve" diagram.

If at the beginning of 2020 it was about 35-40%, then at the beginning of the pandemic (in April) it reached its minimum since 2018 - just over 25%. In the 1st quarter of 2021, the approval rate for auto loans was already at the level of 40 - 44%. Partly, such low approval rates for loans in the last year are due to the fact that the pandemic has made its own adjustments - car owners, the vehicles of whom were taken on credit, began to pay them in bad faith. Last year, the share of overdue auto loans was 7.5%. This is 1.2 p.p. higher than in 2019.
