The Russian car market dropped to the fifth place in Europe in March

The Russian car market, which again showed a fall in March, dropped to the fifth place in the ranking of the largest car markets in Europe. According to the data received by the AUTOSTAT agency in the national associations of European automakers, Germany remains the leader in car sales in the previous month, where 292,349 cars were sold (+ 35.9%).

As noted in the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA), a positive result was recorded for the first time since the beginning of the year, but it is due to a low base of the previous year, when dealerships in the country were closed due to the outbreak of coronavirus. At the same time, the local car market is still far from the pre-crisis level – in compare with March 2019, the current sales figure turned out to be 15% worse. The second place among the largest European car markets was taken by Great Britain with 283,964 cars (+ 11.5%).

According to the British Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Auto Dealers (SMMT), dealerships, which this year could only provide distance car sales, have reopened their doors to visitors since April 12th. In this regard, SMMT expects a record growth in demand in the coming months, due to a low base of the previous year. The third result was shown by France - 182,774 cars, which is 2.9 times higher than the previous year. Thus, a positive result was recorded for the first time after seven months of falling. Italy is the next; its dealers have increased sales 6 times to 168,684 cars.

If, when considering the European automotive market, we take into account Russia, then our country dropped to the fifth line of the European rating. According to preliminary estimates of the agency "AUTOSTAT", sales of passenger cars were about 139 thousand units the last month (excluding LCV). We also add that the Spanish car market in March grew 2.3 times to 85,819 cars.
