The Russian car market showed a fall again in March

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in March fell by 5.7% to 148,676 vehicles. According to the results of three months of 2021, the Russian car market was 387,322 cars (-2.8%), according to the data of the Association of European Businesses.

As noted by the AEB, March was the best month of 2020, before a lockdown followed in April. The next couple of months will rectify the situation and the market will show the growth, as the results of the coming months will be compared with the worst period in the history of the auto industry, associated with business restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. In general, consumer interest decreases slightly as prices rise; in some cases, there is still a shortage in the supply of certain models. Uncertainty about the increase in the recycling fee is also not helping the market.

The biggest slowdown in sales is observed in the mass segment, the association noted. According to the current AEB forecast, by the end of 2021, 1 million 632 thousand passenger cars and light commercial vehicles will be sold in Russia, which means a 2.1% market growth in compare with the previous year. Leadership in the Russian car market is held by LADA brand, the sales of which in March increased by 3% and reached 33,779 cars. The second place in terms of sales volume is kept by KIA - sales of 20,057 cars (+ 1%) provided the Korean brand with the leadership in the foreign car market.

The third place is occupied by Hyundai with 15,332 sold cars, which is lower by 3% than a year ago. Renault is the next - cars of this brand were chosen by 11,659 buyers (-15%). Toyota still finishes the top five with sales of 10,278 cars (-18%). The TOP-10 of best-selling brands in March also included Skoda (9,737 units, -1%), Volkswagen (9,442 units, -6%), Nissan (5,705 units, -25%), GAZ (4,521 units, -4%) and Haval (2,833 units, + 77%).
