How can car sales in Russia grow?

Car market.jpg

Global vehicle sales in 2020 fell by 14% to 77.7 million units. In the TOP-15 of car markets of the leading countries, only one - South Korean - showed a positive trend (+ 5.8%). The rest ones went negative. Such countries as Spain, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and France suffered heavy losses - more than a quarter of their car markets.

Such data were provided by the director of the agency "AUTOSTAT" Sergey Tselikov, speaking at the XI forum "ForAuto-2021. Automotive market, results and forecasts”. The expert also mentioned that Russia is the 10th one in this TOP-15. It came out of the "covid" year with fewer losses than others.

The expert also stopped separately on the passenger car segment. He noted that in our country there is still a correlation between oil prices and car prices - this trend is stable (the last, 2020th year was non-standard and depended to a greater extent on other factors).

In addition, AUTOSTAT agency compared the weighted average price of new passenger cars in 2020 and 2014 and received an increase of 68%. At the same time, the Japanese yen against the ruble during this period increased by 102%, the US dollar - by 96%, the euro - by 84%, the yuan - by 83%. And in these figures we should look for an explanation why car prices in Russia are growing and will continue to grow.

As for forecasts for 2021, the experts traditionally gave three options for the further development of events. “There are many uncertainties at the moment,” said Sergei Tselikov. - If all goes well, the market could grow by 4%. The most pessimistic option is to return to the 2009 level (1.3 million units), that is, “minus” 11.7%. Our average scenario is “minus” 5.5%”.
