The Russian car market ranked the fourth in Europe in January

Russian car market, which started 2021 with a decrease, nevertheless retained the fourth place in the ranking of the largest car markets in Europe. According to the data obtained by the AUTOSTAT agency in the national associations of European automakers, Germany remains the leader in car sales the last month, where 169,754 cars were sold (-31.1%).

As noted in the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA), the drop in sales, in particular, is due to the fact that due to the epidemiological situation, some car dealerships are still closed. In addition, since January 2021, after a six-month reduction, the value-added tax rate was raised again, which caused a high level of new car registrations in December of the last year. Italy took the second place among the largest European car markets with 134,001 cars (-14%). As noted in the Italian Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ANFIA), the negative result is due, in particular, to fewer working days in compare with January the last year, as well as to the ongoing government crisis in the country.

The third result was shown by France – 126,381 cars (-5.8%). Thus, the negative dynamics is recorded for the sixth month in a row. If, when considering the European automotive market, we take into account Russia, then our country took the fourth line in the European rating.

According to the agency "AUTOSTAT", sales of passenger cars were 94,712 units the last month (-4.8%). This time Great Britain finished the top five of European leaders, the dealers of which sold 90,249 cars (-39.5%). This is the worst start to the year since 1970 as showrooms remain closed, according to the British Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Dealers (SMMT). At the same time, distance sales of cars are allowed.
