Russian car market fell by 9% in 2020

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in December fell by 2.1% to 166,666 vehicles. At the end of 2020, the Russian car market was 1 million 598 thousand 825 cars (-9.1%), according to the data of the Association of European Businesses.

As noted in the AEB, the last year turned out to be one of the most difficult for the Russian automotive market: sales of new cars exceeded the previous year by only four months. Despite all the difficulties, in terms of sales dynamics in 2020, Russia showed one of the best results among the largest automotive markets in the world, and in Europe it took the fourth place. This year has confirmed the very strong position and long-term interest of car manufacturers in the Russian market, as well as the critical importance of government support measures for the sustainability of the automotive business in Russia.

According to the AEB forecast, by the end of 2021, 1 million 632 thousand passenger cars and light commercial vehicles will be sold in Russia, which means a 2.1% market growth in compare with the previous year. Leadership in the Russian car market is held by the LADA brand, the sales of which in the previous were 343,112 vehicles (-5%). The second place in terms of sales volume is kept by KIA - sales of 201,727 cars (-11%) provided the Korean brand with the leadership in the foreign car market. The third line is occupied by Hyundai with the indicator of 163,244 sold cars, which is lower by 9% than a year ago.

Renault is the next - cars of this brand were chosen by 128,408 buyers (-11%). Volkswagen finished the top five, with sales of 100,171 cars (-4%). Skoda (94,632 units, + 7%), Toyota (91,598 units, -12%), Nissan (56352 units, -13%), GAZ (51169 units, -20%) and BMW (42721 units, + 3%) also entered the TOP-10 of best-selling brands at the end of 2020.
