Born in the USSR: how many "Soviet" vehicles are left in the Russian Federation?

December 26th marks 29 years since the collapse of the USSR. We will not go into the political details of this event, but on the occasion of such a date, we will simply tell you how many more vehicles produced in Soviet times remained in our country. As it turned out, among 55.4 million registered units of auto and motor vehicles, 12% were produced during the Soviet era, i.e. before 1992.

According to the agency "AUTOSTAT", in quantitative terms, this is 6.8 million units (as of July 1, 2020). Thus, this is every eighth vehicle in Russia. The highest share is noted in the motorcycle segment - 70%. In other words, about 1.7 million units of motor vehicles left the assembly line during the Union period. Among trucks, these figures are 36%, or about 1.4 million vehicles.

In the bus segment there are 17.5% of them, which is equivalent to slightly more than 70 thousand units. Among light commercial vehicles (LCV), only 9% belong to the "Soviet", or over 370 thousand units. And their smallest share was recorded among passenger cars - 7.5%. Although their number is the highest quantitatively, it is 3.3 million units.
