The dynamics of the Russian car market in 2019

Dealers spoke about the future of the Russian car market in 2021

Despite the increased demand for new cars in recent months, the Russian car market may return to its decline in the near future. “Unfortunately, I assume that the increased demand for cars in recent months will result in a market decline in early 2021. We understand that the market will be influenced by two things the next year: the rise in prices and the level of income of the population. Since there are no prospects for the growth of household incomes, it means that along with the rise in prices, the government's support for demand through preferential lending programs will become a determining factor. In general, as we see today, the dynamics of growth of the car market will be within 3 - 5% the next year but the first quarter will drop in comparison with 2020,” says the President of the Association “ROAD” Vyacheslav Zubarev.

According to Igor Bader, General Director of Pragmatika Lada JSC Kupchino, a drop in the automotive market has already been observed in December - now, for most mass brands, the number of requests turned out to be lower than in November, and with a high degree of probability demand will fall in the first quarter of 2021 as well. At the moment, due to the increase in the number of cases of coronavirus infection, it is likely that in January the work of car dealerships in large cities may be restricted, which will lead to a repeat of the situation in April-May of 2020.

As noted by Alexey Gulyaev, AVILON AG, the most noticeable and influential factor in the automotive industry is the shortage of cars, which persists for most brands and restrains sales growth. Depending on the brand and model of the car, the waiting period can be from 1.5 to 6 months. The deficit will continue in the first months of 2021: changes can be expected at the end of the first - beginning of the second quarter. The supply volumes in 2021 are planned with an increase by 2020 only closer to the middle of the year, which is expected to be plus 6-8% due to the lockdown of this year.

“Regarding the pricing strategy of automakers for the coming year, I don't think we can expect a sharp increase in car prices in January or February. In my opinion, prices will rise within 0.5-1% per a month. The car market is a strategic competition for the minds and wallets of consumers. None of the participants are ready to lose their place in the basket. Everyone is closely watching each other's behavior. The price of a product on the market and its sales volumes are in direct proportion to each other. The increase in recycling fee will increase the prices for net imports and reduce its sales volumes, ”predicts Roman Slutskiy, General Director of Alarm-Motors Group.
