For 6 years, the number of models in the Russian car market fell by 30%

Against the background of falling car sales in Russia, the number of models on the market is also decreasing. So, the experts of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" found out that for the last 6 years, this figure, as well as the volume of sales of new cars, fell by 30%. In 2014, 442 models of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were presented in the Russian market and in 2020 there were only 309 of them. Thus, over 6 years the number of models offered by automakers to Russian buyers fell by 133 units, or 30%.

In percentage terms, American brands lost the most during this time (-48%). This year they were represented by 21 models, and 6 years ago there were 40 of them. The number of models of Japanese brands has significantly decreased - by 41%, or 39 units. Now there are 56 of them. But models of European brands (-54 units) have left our market more than others in absolute terms. This year they are represented by 151 models – lower by 26% than in 2014. As for other brands, they "lost" less. For example, the number of models of Russian brands for the period under review decreased from 22 to 16, Korean - from 33 to 26, Chinese - from 47 to 39. According to the experts of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT", in the conditions of a noticeable drop in car sales (for several years) manufacturers are forced to reduce their lineup and rely on more popular models.
