How have car fleets changed in million-plus cities for 5 years?

2.jpg

The analytic agency "AUTOSTAT" conducted a study of the fleets of passenger cars in large cities of Russia and found out in which of them for the last 5 years* the number of cars grew most of all. According to the agency, Krasnodar became the leader in terms of fleet growth - the number of registered cars there increased by 17% for 5 years, and by the beginning of 2020 the total number of passenger cars in this million-plus city reached 351.1 thousand units.

Slightly lower growth rates (9%) for the reporting period were noted in Voronezh, where the fleet volume reached 332.8 thousand units. Comparable dynamics, from 6 to 7%, was observed in four more Russian cities - Yekaterinburg (466.4 thousand units), Volgograd (266.6 thousand units), Nizhny Novgorod (364.3 thousand units) and Perm (254.4 thousand units). The number of passenger cars in St. Petersburg has grown by 5% for five years and now it reaches 1 million 736.3 thousand units. The same increase in the car fleet was recorded in Chelyabinsk (331.5 thousand units), slightly lower in Kazan (379.9 thousand units) and Ufa (323.8 thousand units) - plus 4% and 3%, respectively ... Comparatively low growth rates, from 1 to 3%, were noted in Novosibirsk (454 thousand units), Omsk (332.8 thousand units) and Rostov-on-Don (326 thousand units).

In Samara, for the last 5 years, the number of registered cars has decreased (by 3%), and at the beginning of 2020 there are 387.9 thousand of them in this megalopolis. Negative dynamics in the growth of the passenger fleet is also observed in Moscow (-4%). However, there are no worrying trends due to this decline. So, for example, by noting that at the same time the car fleet of Moscow region grew by 9.1%, the experts believe that the decline in the number of passenger transport in Moscow is partly due to population migration, and partly to a well-developed public transport network (in recent years, the car sharing was actively developing in the capital, additional branches and metro stations were built, etc.). Probably, in the largest Russian metropolis, a certain percentage of residents already prefer not to own, but to use cars to move "from point A to point B".

* for comparison, data on the fleets of megacities as of January 1st, 2015 and January 1st, 2020 are taken.
