Leaders and outsiders of the Russian automotive market in the first half of 2021

Russian car market reduced the fall to 52% in May

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in May fell by 51.8% to 63,033 vehicles. According to the results of five months of 2020, the Russian car market reached 478,135 cars (-25.7%), according to the Association of European Businesses.

As noted in AEB, the continued significant decline in new car sales in May was due to the fact that car dealerships in Moscow, St. Petersburg and most regional dealers were closed throughout the month. Technical centers were able to resume work, and, accordingly, the flow of customers began to grow gradually. The AEB expects that in June, against the background of the begun relaxation of restrictions in most of the country, the situation will slightly improve, which will affect positively the stability of the dealer network. The implementation of the first package of government support measures will contribute to the gradual recovery of the market in the second half of the year.

The leadership in the Russian car market is held by LADA brand, its sales reached 15,580 cars in the previous month (-46%). KIA is the second one in terms of sales - the sale of 8008 cars (-59%) provided the Korean brand with the leadership in the foreign car market. Hyundai returned to the third place with 6,477 sold cars, which is lower by 57% than a year ago.

Then Renault follows - cars of this brand were chosen by 5,640 buyers (-47%). Toyota finished the top-5 of leaders, its sales reached 4,486 cars (-43%). According to the results of May, the TOP-10 of the best-selling brands also included Volkswagen (3,621 units, -58%), Skoda (2,893 units, -59%), GAZ (2,719 units, -37%), Nissan (2,214 units, -46%) and UAZ (1,359 units, -45%).
