Dynamics of the Russian car market in the first half of 2018

Dealers said what will happen to the car market after quarantine

Many motorists who wanted to upgrade the car hastened to do this back in March, before the upcoming price hike due to the collapse of the ruble and the closure of quarantine dealerships. Dealers interviewed by the AUTOSTAT agency estimated the market demand in conditions when cars went on sale at new prices, and incomes of the population after not working quarantine and with account of the worsening economic situation are reduced.

“Now it’s hard to say that there is any serious pent-up demand, since everyone who really wanted to buy a car did it in March. With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the decision of many customers has changed: a significant part (according to our estimates, this is up to a quarter of customers) generally postponed large purchases indefinitely due to reduced personal income and economic uncertainty. Therefore, after a forced “production and sales pause” you should not expect explosive growth, the restoration of demand in the automotive market will not be quick”,-said Mikhail Marakushev, head of the new car sales department at Avtomir Group.

According to Denis Tsepelev, Development Director of Alarm Motors Group of Companies, the main argument for the sale now is the increase in car prices due to the exchange rate, but this is not for long. Serious stimulus measures, such as a trade-in program, car loans with a subsidized rate, programs for young drivers and families with children, as well as for budget categories (doctors, military, employees ...) can seriously affect demand. In addition, customers' emphasis may change slightly towards used cars if new cars aren’t available for customers for some financial reasons, adds Aleksey Ermilov, Marketing Director of AvtoSpetsTsentr Group of Companies.

In turn, the development director of Rolf, Vladimir Miroshnikov, noted that due to the spread of coronavirus, a car purchase has become relevant, including for those who do not use transport on a daily basis. Taxis, car sharing and especially public transport are no longer perceived as safe ways to travel. However, many customers who need a car are hesitant to buy in an economic downturn. They will go to car dealerships only in case of the launch of market incentive programs that can become a decision-making catalyst for them. If it does not happen, then we can talk more about the formation of deferred demand, rather than about additional real transactions.
