The global car market fell by 45% in April

The global car market in April fell by 44.8% to 3 million 967 thousand cars and light commercial vehicles. According to the results of four months of 2020, sales of cars in the world reached 21 million 012 thousand units (-29.2%), according to the LMC Automotive consulting company.

China remains the world leader in car sales in April with 1 million 936 thousand cars, which corresponds to the level of the previous year. As noted, the stabilization of the Chinese car market was facilitated by the weakening of quarantine measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as well as pent-up consumer demand, which had formed in the previous few months.

In America, 721.8 thousand cars were sold – lower by 45.6% than a year before. Automotive markets in Western Europe in April reached 274.9 thousand cars (-80.1%). Car sales in Eastern Europe fell by 69.8% to 104.4 thousand units. The collapse in demand in the region is due to the closure of dealerships as a part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as well as a drop in oil prices. In South America, local dealers sold 55.3 thousand cars, which is lower by 78.5% in compare with April of the previous year.

Among the world's largest car markets, it is also worth mentioning Japan (267.3 thousand units, -28.7%), Korea (164.3 thousand units, + 8.3%) and Canada (65.8 thousand units, -63.8%).
