In April, Russians bought three times less new cars than in March


According to the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT", in April of 2020, the residents of the Russian Federation purchased 54.5 thousand new cars. According to agency experts, this figure is almost 3 times lower than in March (160.6 thousand units). And in comparison with the result of April 2019 (152.2 thousand units), the market crashed by 64%.

Recall that against the backdrop of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, an inoperative regime operated in our country throughout April. In addition to the fact that dealers had practically minimized the physical sales of cars (some of them were transferred online), the conditions for vehicles registering with the traffic police (by appointment only) changed. All this, together, led to a serious drop in car purchases by the Russians. It affected almost all participants of the Russian market.

So, for the whole previous month, 12.8 thousand new LADA cars were purchased – lower by 64% than in April of 2019. Sales of the Korean brands KIA and Hyundai were 6.7 thousand and 5.3 thousand units, respectively, i.e. 64% and 65% lower than a year ago. Also the market volumes fell by more than a half at other brands included in the TOP-10: Renault (4.9 thousand units; -63%), Toyota (3.9 thousand units; -56%), Volkswagen ( 3.4 thousand units, -65%), Skoda (2.9 thousand units; -64%), Nissan (2 thousand units; -66%), BMW (1.6 thousand units. ; -55%) and Mitsubishi (1.4 thousand units; -65%).

In addition to them, Mazda (1.2 thousand units; -51%) and Mercedes-Benz (1.1 thousand units; -68%) overcame the thousandth milestone, while the rest of the brands did not reach it. We should note that the April crash of the market contributed to its "negative" also by the results of four months of 2020. So, for this period, the volume of purchases of new cars reached 430.1 thousand units – lower by 9.5% than in January - April of the previous year.
