St. Petersburg Nissan plant will dismiss about 450 employees by August

Nissan plant in St. Petersburg plans to dismiss about 450 people out of 2,000 employees by August 2020 due to the transition to a single-shift regime, the company’s press service informed Interfax. In early March, Nissan already announced plans about the transition of its St. Petersburg plant, producing X-Trail, Qashqai and Murano crossovers, to a one-shift schedule due to the situation in the Russian car market, but then it was talked about a few months. Then, due to measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Nissan suspended the production in St. Petersburg until the end of April.

Recall that the performance of Nissan in St. Petersburg is 100 thousand cars per a year. The capacities of the plant, which currently produces Nissan Qashqai, X-Trail and Murano crossovers, permit to produce up to five different models at a time. As AUTOSTAT previously reported, by the end of 2019, St. Petersburg Nissan plant produced 52,339 cars, which is lower by 7.4% in compare with the record year for the company in 2018.

The most popular model in the Russian conveyor of Nissan is Qashqai crossover with 27,291 cars (+ 3%). It is worth noting that in February in St. Petersburg, the release of the updated Nissan Qashqai crossover started. The production of X-Trail SUV reached 21,532 cars (-19%), the production of flagship crossover Murano - 3606 units in the previous year (+ 2.4%).

Nissan's bestseller in the Russian market is still Nissan Qashqai crossover in 2019, sales of which grew by 8.5% to 25,158 units. It is worth noting that in April, dealers received an updated Qashqai. The second place was taken by Nissan X-Trail with 20,915 sold cars (-8.6%). Sales of flagship crossover Nissan Murano reached 3367 units (-1.2%).
