Experts assessed the impact of quarantine on car retail


Since the end of March, car dealerships have been closed as a part of the measures introduced in the country to stop the coronavirus pandemic. Some dealers in these conditions switch to online car sales.

According to the director of the analytical agency AUTOSTAT, Sergey Tselikov, there were no such April results in the history of the Russian market. In case that almost none of the dealers will work, sales will decrease by 70-90%. There are some regions where some dealers still work in some days of April. They will provide the 10-30% of the market. “I’m afraid that May will start no better than April and the result of May sales will depend on the end date of buyers' “isolation” from dealers. We can see again a drop of the same 70-90%. Further I would very much like to believe that the acute phase of the coronavirus will pass. In this case, from June, the country will begin gradually to return to its normal working rhythm. But the demand for new cars will still not return to the “pre-virus” level. It will begin a strong influence of the economic crisis on the market. Purchasing power will decrease even more, and prices will rise even higher. Throughout the year, one can focus on the new car market reduction from -30% (optimistic scenario) to -50% (pessimistic scenario),” - predicts Sergei Tselikov.

In its turn, the General Director of Fresh Auto, Denis Migal, notes that now dealers are forced to deal with challenges from at least two sides: firstly, this is almost zero demand and a quiet market, and secondly, this is the actions of partners, banks and importers. “I suppose that after general self-isolation, when demand decreases and, accordingly, the pace of production of new cars, lenders will make even more stringent requirements for dealers, and those who are on the black list will have very little chance of survival. Many dealers, even before the pandemic, were in a difficult situation and had difficulty with their obligations fulfilling to banks and importers, and it will affect negatively them. At the same time, mergers and acquisitions, in my opinion, will not become a panacea either: the market is changing, and those who are seizing competitors against this background in order to increase their share become more clumsy and less capable for rapid changes. It is more important now to observe the market and analyze the new preferences of banks, importers and customers - and on this basis to be flexible, restructure processes and create new products,” - summarizes Denis Migal.
