Car sharing services were suspended in Moscow, but free bike rental was opened

Since April 13th, the provision of car sharing and taxi services has been suspended in Moscow and the Moscow Region, except for those carriers that have permission to operate as a passenger taxi. According to the mayor’s decree, “car sharing should not work in any form, as it is impossible to ensure the safety of customers,” - the Moscow News Agency reported, referring to a message from the press service of the Moscow Department of Transport.

The Department of Transport promises to conduct verification of the implementation of this decree on a daily basis. While it is a question of suspension for the period from April 13th to 19th, however, in accordance with the situation worsening with the spread of coronavirus in the capital, experts believe that this "pause" will continue.

According to the analytical agency AUTOSTAT, as of January 1st, 2020, nine companies-operators worked in Moscow car sharing, in their fleets there were more than 31 thousand cars. In the period from 2017 to 2020, this type of service was developing so actively in the capital that Moscow managed to become the world leader in the car sharing.

According to expert forecasts, this direction would continue its development in 2020, if not for the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, at this stage, taking into account the prevailing circumstances, bike rental began to develop in Moscow - for couriers and volunteers.

According to the official website of the Moscow City Hall, since April 10th, free (for the first time) bike rental stations were opened in the capital. Only couriers and volunteers can use them. It will help them to deliver quickly groceries and essentials to Muscovites who are forced to stay at home. It is primarily about the elderly and those who have chronic diseases. Half of the stations have already started to work; others will be opened on April 17th.
