PSA brings SUV production to Europe

PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Mitsubishi will transfer production of the French carmaker"s medium SUVs from Japan to Europe in 2009. Moving production of the Mitsubishi Outlander-based Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser to the Japanese carmaker"s NedCar plant in the Netherlands will allow PSA to better manage demand in the growing SUV sector. European sales of medium-sized SUVs nearly doubled over the 2000 to 2006 period, reaching 480,999 units in 2006, according to JATO Dynamics.PSA believes that manufacturing in Europe will lower waiting periods for future customers, notably by reducing transport time from factory to showroom.
The production shift is expected to be cost-neutral. PSA will eliminate the cost of shipping diesel engines used on the small SUVs from France to Japan, but will take a hit as it switches production from yens to euros, according to a PSA spokesman. Mitsubishi has produced 24,300 Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser SUVs at its Mizushima plant in western Japan since the vehicles launched in September 2007. Sales are split evenly between the two brands, with demand outpacing supply for the two vehicles, the spokesman said.
PSA projects that full-year sales in 2009 will reach 24,000 units in Europe, alongside an additional 6,000 units in non-European markets, the spokesman said. Mitsubishi will continue producing PSA"s non EU-bound SUVs in Japan, but plans to move manufacturing to its Nagoya plant, at Okazaki, starting in November 2008.
