St. Petersburg plant Nissan will go to work in one shift

St. Petersburg Nissan plant will switch to one shift in a few months due to a decrease in demand in the Russian car market. This was reported in the press service of Nissan, noting that the Russian market remains a priority for the company, and that the plant’s capabilities will allow it to return to the two-shift schedule as soon as the market situation improves.

The company also added that the work in one shift of Nissan plant is not related to the coronavirus factor, although the manufacturer had problems with the supply of components from China at the beginning of the previous month, now there are none.

According to the executive director of Autostat agency, Sergey Udalov, now the main problem for Nissan in the Russian market is a narrow model range that has not been updated for a long time. Sales are supported mainly by X-Trail and Qashqai, but the offer of crossovers is too limited and there is no low-cost SUV at a price similar to Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and KIA Seltos. The solution could be the line expanding or a radical update of the models, the expert concludes.

Recall that the performance of Nissan in St. Petersburg is 100 thousand cars per a year. The capacities of the plant, which currently produces Nissan Qashqai, X-Trail and Murano crossovers, allow the production of up to five different models at one time.

As AUTOSTAT previously reported, by the end of 2019, St. Petersburg Nissan plant produced 52,339 cars, which is lower by 7.4% in compare with the record 2018 year for the company.
