Skoda wants to build the Up minicar

Skoda wants to build a new factory in the Czech Republic to make Volkswagen group"s new Up minicar. Skoda"s production head, Horst Muhl, said the Czech carmaker wants to build a 200,000- to 250,000-capacity plant for the Up next to its existing factory in Vrchlaby, 100km northeast of Prague.
VW group plans to build at least 500,000 cars annually of a new small-car family based on the Up concept, CEO Martin Winterkorn said at VW"s annual press conference March 13. He said there would be two versions -- one for Western cities and another for emerging markets. In western Europe, the Up will be an upscale city car. A cheaper version is planned for emerging markets such as India.
The VW, Skoda and Seat brands will all get versions of the Up. Potential production locations in Europe are Vrchlaby or VW"s Pamplona factory in Spain, VW sources say. Up variants also will be built in Russia and India, the same sources say. Muhl said VW will decide on production locations for the Up in three to four months.
Skoda also is considering expanding the Vrchlaby plant to build new Skoda models, Muhl said in an interview at the Geneva auto show earlier this month. Currently Vrchlaby makes Octavia sedans and station wagons. Muhl said the factory could also build a low-cost version of the Fabia small car for emerging markets as well as a minivan and an SUV.
