GAZ Group vehicle kits were sent for the assembly of cars to Vietnam

GAZ Group, before the end of 2019, plans to begin the assembly of cars in Vietnam. This was announced by the Chairman of the Russian part of the intergovernmental commission of the Russian Federation and Vietnam on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister, Maxim Akimov. He also said that the vehicle kits for the assembly of City line minibuses based on the Gazelles were sailing to this country by sea, their number is 170 units, and they were almost delivered to the port of destination. And by the end of the year it will be delivered to this country more than 380 vehicle kits.

The Vietnamese market is interesting to Russian automakers, since the country is a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and can become an export springboard to other countries of the union (Australia, Peru, Malaysia, Mexico, Japan, etc.).

However, getting into this market is not so easy, as there are very high import duties for vehicles (about 70%). Recall that back in December 2015, three of our domestic manufacturers - GAZ Group, KAMAZ and Sollers - held several rounds of negotiations in Hanoi regarding the possibility of industrial assembly of their cars in Vietnam. It was fixed by the protocol on the production of motor vehicles supporting in Vietnam that Russian automakers would be able to import 2,550 ready-made vehicles into Vietnam for three years and 13,500 vehicle kits within five years.

It was assumed that Russian companies would have to create a joint venture and the localization of vehicles manufactured in Vietnam should reach 40-50% share by 2025. However, Sollers abandoned plans to launch UAZ production in Vietnam due to harsh conditions and the inability to recoup the project. Representatives of KAMAZ announced this summer that they plan to launch serial assembly of trucks in Vietnam in 2020. Therefore, GAZ begins the first the Vietnamese assembly.
