Nissan may abandon the brand Datsun

Japanese automaker Nissan is likely to abandon the Datsun brand, as well as some unprofitable products, and close several assembly lines around the world, seeking to increase the profits due to reductions.

According to Reuters, citing informed sources, Nissan is considering the production capacity reducing in any of the markets where it has plants, with the exception of China. However, the company does not have plans to close the plants entirely or leave completely any country.

Nissan declined to comment. In general, the plan aims to free up resources in order to focus more strongly on the US and China. The main blow is likely to fall on the Datsun brand. These models are manufactured in Indonesia, India and Russia.

According to sources, the problems began when Nissan began sales of Datsun cars in small markets in 2014, including Indonesia, India, Russia and South Africa, where it also sells cars under the Nissan brand. Recall that in Russia, sales of Datsun cars began in September of 2014. Currently, the brand is represented in our country by two models - the Datsun on-DO sedan and the mi-DO hatchback, which are produced at AvtoVAZ's facilities.

As AUTOSTAT previously reported, in the first 9 months of 2019, Russian Datsun dealers sold 16,514 cars, which is 21% higher than the figure for the same period of the previous year. As a result, the brand’s market share was 1.3% versus 1.1% a year before, according to AEB. The bestseller of the brand is the Datsun on-DO sedan.
