Volvo will present the electric crossover XC40

Volvo will unveil the new VolvoXC40 electric crossover in October. As it was noted, it will become one of the safest cars in the history of Volvo.

Despite the high safety standards of the existing XC40, VolvoCars engineers had to redesign completely the front of the car. This was due to the physical absence of a traditional engine, as well as the need to meet the strict safety requirements of VolvoCars and provide maximum protection for all passengers in the car, informed the press service of the Swedish brand.

VolvoCars has thought out a special solution so that passengers are not injured in the event of a collision and the battery is not damaged. The latter is protected by a special frame made of pressed aluminum and placed in a central tunnel, which creates a deformation zone around it. The location of the battery in the floor of the car reduces significantly its center of gravity, which provides even greater protection against tipping over.

Not only front part of body frame was strengthened, but also the rear one. The electric motor is placed here in such a way as to ensure the safe removal of forces arising from the collision from the passenger compartment and to reduce the degree of their impact on passengers.

The electric XC40 brings with it innovations also in active safety. It will be the first Volvo car equipped with the new ADAS (AdvancedDriverAssistanceSystems) touch platform, powered by Zenuity, a joint venture between Volvo Cars and Veoneer. The new ADAS platform is a state-of-the-art scalable active safety system that consists of a set of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors. The scalable nature of the platform opens up opportunities for its further development and lays the foundation for the future introduction of autonomous driving technology.
