Ukraine has banned the import of cars from Russia

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine made changes to the list of goods prohibited for importation into the customs territory of Ukraine, the country of origin of which is Russia. The Ukrainian “embargo” now includes Russian vehicles, including both passenger cars and buses, trucks, tractors, special vehicles (truck cranes, fire trucks and sweepers, concrete mixers, etc.) and motorcycles. The prohibition of new changes will begin on July 1st, 2019.

It should be noted that earlier it was not about a total ban on the import of Russian cars, buses and spare parts, but about the introduction of special duties on goods from the Russian Federation in the amount of 5% from August 1st. Recall that in addition to the cars of the “native Russian” brands LADA, GAZ and UAZ, cars of other brands were also sold in the Ukrainian market for quite a long time, also made in Russian plants - for example, Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Accent (Solaris), while Renault Logan and some Nissan crossovers in the neighboring state came straight from Europe. Before the events of 2014, there was also a period when Russian Logans and Nissan Sentra produced in Izhevsk were sold at Ukrainian show rooms.

However, for the last few years, the demand for rest Russian-made cars has decreased greatly. For example, for the first six months of 2019, not a single Russian brand, including LADA, even entered the TOP-20 of the Ukrainian car market, and the total market share of new cars imported from Russia did not exceed 5% for the last two years, ranging from 3.7 to 5.1% in 2017 - 2019.

Nevertheless, formally in Ukraine, there were presented cars of the LADA brand (the whole model range), GAZ brand (the whole model range), UAZ brand (the whole model range), KAMAZ trucks and PAZ buses, as well as Russian-made foreign cars - Hyundai (Creta and Accent), Volkswagen Polo, KIA Rio and Chevrolet Niva.
