Ford will half number of suppliers

American car maker Ford intends to decrease number of its suppliers significantly. At that the company has already stopped collaboration with a half of its ex-partners. Moreover, the concern intends to decrease the number of standard car platforms for global car production from 25 to 9. As an intermediate stage, it is planned, that by 2014, 13% platforms will provide the production of not less than 80% of the brand’s cars, AutoNews.Ru informs.

“In 2005 we had over 3,000 suppliers. Today their number deceased to 1,500 and in the nearest future it will decrease to 750 suppliers”, - Tony Brown, Ford purchasing director told, having mentioned, that “remain in the ranks” partners will be offered the opportunity to extend their business with Ford, as well as to take part in designing of the new models in earlier stages

Of late years Ford purchased car components for $65 billion annually. “We intend to make the best use of serial production and unification in the future” – Tony Brown said. That is why Ford strives to decrease the number of standard platforms and to increase the number of unified spare parts and components. This favours the innovations, decreases production costs and increases manufacturers and suppliers’ quality, he said.
