The Russian car market heightened the fall up to 7% in May

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia fell by 6.7% up to 137,624 cars in May. By the results of five months of 2019, the Russian car market amounted to 677,570 cars (-2.2%), according to data of the Association of European Businesses.

As it was noted in AEB, the May drop in sales was the most significant for two years. Of course, one could say that the weather that is surprisingly warm for this time of the year does not help sales, because many people spend more than usual time outside of big cities and shopping centers. However, the main reason for the current trend remains weak demand due to macroeconomic factors such as rising costs of households after the VAT increase at the beginning of the year. This is especially true for the automotive market, which is still adapting to a significant reduction in government subsidies that have stimulated retail sales in the past. Recall, according to the AEB forecast, in 2019 the Russian car market could grow by 3.6% up to 1.87 million cars in compare with the last year.

Leadership in the Russian car market is kept by AvtoVAZ, which sold 29,739 LADA cars in May, which corresponds to the level of the previous year. The second place in terms of sales was occupied by KIA - sales of 19,461 vehicles (-1%) provided the Korean brand with the leadership in the foreign car market. Hyundai keeps the third place with the indicator of 14,891 sold cars, which is less by 6% in compare with the last year.

Then Renault follows - cars of this brand were chosen by 10,595 buyers (-13%). The TOP-five of leaders is closed by Volkswagen, sales of which were 8,704 cars (-4%). According to the results of May, TOP-10 of the best-selling brands also included Toyota (7,880 units, -9%), Skoda (6,982 units, + 17%), GAZ (4,309 units, -8%), Nissan (4,076 units; -31%) and Ford (3,400 units, -8%).
