Experts predict the further decline of the Russian car market

After almost two years of continuous growth, sales of new cars in Russia for the first four months of 2019 have gone “to the minus”, despite the effect of targeted government programs of preferential car loans. Leading car dealers and experts, who were polled by AUTOSTAT, predicted that the fall of the Russian car market will continue in the future, and it may return to the growth no earlier than autumn.

According to the director of the analytic agency "AUTOSTAT", Sergey Tselikov, the further monthly dynamics of the car market will be slightly negative (ranging from 0 to -10%). The current level of monthly sales (140-150 thousand) corresponds to the current state of the economy, which is stagnant. Therefore, we should not expect significant market fluctuations up or down.
In turn, Denis Petrunin, the general director of AvtoSpetsTsentr GC, predicts that by the end of 2019, the Russian car market will remain at the same level as the last year, possibly decreasing by 5-6%. It is hardly worth expecting substantial growth in the coming year; rather, it is even worth being guided by 2021-2022. “We do not expect the growth of the market, because there are no global programs in the country that could stimulate demand, such as the World Cup, the Olympic Games, etc. There may be positive developments in the fall, but you should not expect a sharp recovery in demand, unless they are not redistributed towards the global auto market incentive programs,” - he says.

Rolf expects a confident transition of the car market to a positive territory not earlier than autumn. At the same time, according to the basic forecast of Rolf for 2019, the market will remain at the milestones of the previous year, that is, the sales dynamics of new cars will be 0%. “First of all, the key factor for the dynamics of sales of individual brands and for the market as a whole will be the measures that will be offered by the government to stimulate the consumer activity and, secondly, whether automakers are ready to launch special promotions to support the demand for their cars, ” - says Vladimir Miroshnikov, Rolf development director.

Vyacheslav Zubarev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TransTechService Group of Companies, believes that the car market will return to natural growth, which does not require state support, when the country's economy, incomes of the population and its purchasing power grow steadily. Until it happens, there won’t be the steady growth in the Russian automotive market.
